NRCan
New GTAA membership on the EPC although some attrition of other members
GTAA has confirmed funding for $20,000 for tree planting event
Confirmed City of Mississauga and Region of Peel will be running the Recycling
Collection Drive during earth week across 20 facilities
Waste Committee is seeing low attendance at meetings: lack of innovative ideas
Confirmed several funds from grants and businesses to support water projects
Discussion
Staff discussed engaging with members through a membership survey. Insight was provided by
a Committee guest who had managed memberships while at a Board of Trade. In his
experience, membership is lost in different ways: engagement and knowledge about the
member organization is not widely spread amongst employees; typically, the organization has a
relationship with only one individual (when that individual member leaves the organization,
membership is lost); and affordability (more success with paying a membership monthly rather
than annually).
Committee members were interested in understanding the EV infrastructure that is in place
today in southern Ontario.

Committee members discussed the need to identify other impactful waste opportunities to
reinvigorate interest in the waste committee. Organics and textiles are a natural fit, however, a
committee member expressed an interest in exploring ways to reduce and eliminate plastics
and micro plastics in water.
Actions
In order to address membership, it was recommended that staff explore the potential for a 4 -
month contract or other solution to increase membership which is currently at 30 members.
Staff will develop a membership survey and distribute to current and past members to garner
insight into why and what members are looking for.
Staff to undertake research on the existing electric vehicle infrastructure and identify what
different municipalities are doing to support EV infrastructure in southern Ontario.
Staff to explore efforts around eliminating plastics and micro plastics in water. Canada will try to
use its presidency at the G7 to persuade members to adopt ambitious goals for plastics
recycling and waste reduction as well as talking to other countries into banning microbeads —
tiny pieces of plastic found in toothpaste and shower gels.
The EMC Chair also requested other EMC members to identify new waste opportunities
