Boylen RESOLVED THAT:- this Advisory Board concur in the proposed Programme for the 1962 opening of the Pioneer Village, Black Creek Conservation Area, for the week --end of May 19th, 1962. Carried Unanimously. PERCY BAND TOY COLLECTION: A communication in regard to the use of and the loan of the Percy Band Toy Collection was discussed in some detail. Res. #3 Moved By:- J. A. Carroll THE BOARD RECOMMENDS THAT:- as a matter of policy, every effort be made to adequately protect the Percy Band Toy Collection when exhibited or stored at the Pioneer Village. Adopted Unanimously. REFER TO THE EXECUTIVE PROGRESS REPORT: A Staff Progress Report was presented and discussed in some detail. PROPOSED ADDITIONAL STRUCTURES: Mr. Colucci brought to the attention of the Board certain structures which might be considered for inclusion in the Pioneer Village. Res. #5 Moved By:- G. R. Boylen RESOLVED THAT:- the following proposed structures be referred to the Technical Advisory Sub - Committee for consideration; (i) Bater's Store (ii) Moody House (iii) York Mills House (iv) Dundas Toll Gate Adopted Unanimously REFER TO TECHNICAL ADVISORY SUB- COMMITTEE CANADIAN CENTENARY COUNCIL: Mrs. Hague presented a detailed report of a Meeting which the Canadian Centenary Council held on March 9th and 10th, 1962, and recommended that the Brief prepared by the Staff in 1960 for consider- ation by the Province be reviewed and revised for the present purpose of an application to the Province for a Grant to assist in the completion of the Pioneer Village as a local Centennial project. Mason THE BOARD RECOMMENDS THAT:- the Staff be directed to prepare a Brief for presentation to the Province of Ontario for the purpose of an application to the Province for a Grant to assist in the completion of the Pioneer Village as a local Centennial project. REFER TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE & LOCAL HISTORY: A communication was presented from the Ontario Historical Society having regard to an annual award of merit of the American Association of State and Local History. Fry RESOLVED THAT:- the Historical Sites Division Administrator and the Consulting Architect be authorized and directed to prepare a Report on the establishment of an Inn at the Pioneer Village, Black Creek Conservation Area. Boylen THE BOARD RECOMMENDS THAT:- the Authority not consider the acquisition of the Hogg Store for the Pioneer Village, Black Creek Conservaticn Area. Carried Unanimously. BRIEF RE FEDERAL & PROVINCIAL ASSISTANCE - CANADIAN. CENTENNIAL: The Director of Operations outlined a draft Brief requesting financial - gsistance from the Federal and Provincial Governments for completion of the Pioneer Village, Black Creek Conservation Area, as the Authority's contribution to Canada's Centennial Celebration. THE BOARD RECOMMENDS THAT:- the Brief requesting financial assistance from the Federal and Provincial Governments for completion of the Pioneer Village, Black Creek Conservation Area, as the Authority's contribution to Canada's Centennial Celebration, be finalized and submitted to the Members of the Historical Sites Advisory Board for comment and submitted to the Executive Committee for approval at their next Meeting. INDIAN VILLAGE: Mrs. Hague read a letter from Prof. Emerson of the University of Toronto proposing the establishment of an Indian Village adjacent to the Black Creek at Finch ;venue. Harper RESOD/ED THAT:- the proposal for the establishment of an Indian Village on the Black Creek adjacent to Finch Avenue be referred to the Staff for a further Report. Carried Unanimously. Harper THE BOARD RECOMMENDS THAT:- the Staff be directed commence construction of a suitable exhibit area for the 19th Century Toy Collection as soon as possible. Carried Unanimously. Fry THE BOARD RECOMMENDS THAT : - the Staff be directed to prepare a report on the establishment of a modern Museum Building at the Pioneer Village, Black Creek Conservation Area; THE B0 RD FURTHER RECOMMENDS THAT:- in preparing this report, consideration be given to co- ordinating such a building with York University in order that it may also serve as a centre for the studying of Canadiana. Higgs Chairman Acting Secretary SCHEDULE HA" REPORT N0. 1/62 of the TECHNICAL ADVISORY SUB - COMMITTEE of the HISTORICAL SITES ADVISORY BOARD The Technical Advisory Sub - Commitee met at the Claremont Conservation Area on Thursday, November 1st, 1962, commencing at 4 :00 p.m. Prior to the formal Meeting, site visits were paid to the Half -WO House, Kingston Road and Midland Avenue, and the Bayles" Mill on the former John Bayles? property. Present Were: F -7 Prof. T. F. Mcllwraith V. B. Blake F. Fog Col. J. A. McGinnis Mrs. E. Neil Dr. J. W. Scott Mrs. D. Hague F. L. Lunn K. G. Higgs A. Colucci The following matters were considered: (1) The desirability and suitability of the Half -Way House as an Inn for the Pioneer Village; (2) The suitability of utilizing the material in the Bayles" Mill for reconstruction of a Grist Mill at the Pioneer Village; (3) The location of the proposed Harness Shop in the Pioneer Village; (4) Plans for Drive Shed re Gentleman "s House; It was agreed, and the Sub - Committee Recommends: (1) That in view of the state of preservation and the practicability of moving in addition to other considerations, that di ould the Half -Way House become available, it be em quired.and moved and reconstructed at the Pioneer Village; (2) That the Bayles" Mill, while not suitable for restoration on its present site, would be worthwhile utilizing the timbers and much of the material in it for restoration at the Pioneer Village, and further that it would make a valuable contribution to the Village in the form of a Grist Mill. In general, the Mill should be situated on the North side of Steeles Avenue abutting on the Black Creek, providing soil and other conditions are suitable; That the Harness Shop be reconstructed on the North side of the Cross-Road immediately East of the Blacksmith Shop, and further that the Staff commence reconstruction at the earliest possible date. That the plans for the Drive Shed of the Gentleman's House be approved and that the Staff be instructed to:,commennee restoration immediately; Prof. T. F. Mcllwraith F. L.
