Leavens RESOLVED THAT:- the Staff Progress Report and the Report of the Public Relations Consultant be received. Carried Unanimously. OFFICIAL OPENING - COLD CREEK CONSERVATION AREA: Proposals for the Official Opening of the Cold Creek Conservation Area were discussed in some detail. Res, #3 Moved By:- Mrs. F. Gell Seconded By:- W. Leavens RESOLVED THAT:- Messrs. Wade, Leavens, D. Adair, G. Cooke, C. Sauriol, and Mrs. F. Gell, be a Sub - Committee to arrange the details of the Official Opening of the Cold Creek Conservation Area; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT:- the date of the Official Opening be tentatively set as June 13th, 1962; Carried Unanimously. NATURE PROGRAMME - TECHNICAL SUB - COMMITTEE: The desirability of establishing another Technical Sub - Committee to G -2 - 2 - expand the present Nature Programme was discussed in some detail. Sager THE BOARD RECOMMEND` THAT : - Miss Blanche Snell be engaged as the Conservation School Consultant to provide a preliminary operational plan and that she be paid a fee of $1,200.00. Lunn Chairman Secretary- Treasurer SCHEDULE Lvti,r ITEM #2 G-6 TO: The Information & Education Advisory Board RE: STAFF PROGRESS REPORT - JANUARY 1 - SEPTEMBER 2$, 1962 PROMOTION: Brochure Distribution: 200,000 copies of Black Creek Folder were printed and approximately three-quarters have been distributed; 125,000 copies of the Map were printed and approximately 25,000 distributed; Sufficient copies of the Map are on hand for 1963 distribution; It is proposed to order larger quantities of both the Map and the Black Creek Folder and purchase in alternate years, providing a saving of approximately 25%. Distribution: In general, Pioneer Village Brochures were distributed both within and extensively outside the watershed, whereas the Conservation Area Maps were mainly used within the Authority - The above were distributed to: (a) all 1$ tourist Information Centres; (b) 0.M.L. and A.A.A.; (c) most major regional hotels and motels including Prudhommes, The Beacon, Toronto Arcade, restaurants, service stations, libraries, convention bureaus etc.; (d) Fort York, Casa Loma, and Upper Canada Village; Brochure Stands: Two hundred were purchased and one hundred were distributed to Municipal buildings, libraries and, in general, where large numbers of people congregate and where no other display facilities were provided. Exhibits: (a) Canadian National Sportsmen9s Show -- March 9th to 17th, exhibit on Cold Creek Conservation Area; (b) Canadian National Exhibition -- toy exhibit in new Better Living Centre --- 900 square feet of space donated; (c) Fall Fairs -- Brampton, Markham and Woodbridge -- exhibit on Dutch Elm Disease and Authority assistance, and the Farm Tree Replacement Programme; (d) Library Displays -- exhibits placed in some North York, Etobicoke and Toronto Libraries -- 11 X 14 mounted pictures, pioneer articles, mounted specimens of birds and mamals, with Authority Map and Brochure Stand; Photography Contest: A Photo Contest was run on Pioneer Village Opening Days with 160 entries; promoted by the Authority with the co- operation of Kodak Prizes were donated by various suppliers of photo equipment anu C,P.T.A. Official Openings and Special Days: (a) Cold Creek Conservation Area officially opened on June 20th by the Hon. J. W. Spooner. Opening featured sportsmen9s demonstrations and a tour of the Area. 450 attended. G -7 - 2 - (b) Sportsmen2s Round -up to be held at Cold Creek Conservation Area on September 29th featuring competition for individuals; (c) Pioneer Festival -- to be held October 13th. Film Programme: "Pioneer Village at Black Creek" completed in February. Premiere of film held at Royal Ontario Museum in April 18th, with 300 attending. "Legacy of the Valleys.? was also shown. Seven prints of "Pioneer Village at Black Creek" purchased. 55 lectures to 4,197 people (to August 30); 55 showings of Pioneer Village at Black Creek to 4,588 people; 43 showings of Legacy of the Valleys to 3,200 people; Radio and T.V. Commercials: Five radio commercials produced in April (two on Pioneer Village and three on Conservatian Areas) for Summer use; used by CKFH, CHMC, CKOC, CFGM, CBL, CJBC, CHUM, CKEY, CFRB and CHFI; also have five Winter commercials; TV spots were used on Barrie, Hamilton and Toronto TV stations; Company Promotion: Various companies have taken advantage of the settings at various Conservation Areas -- especially the Pioneer Village for many ads, In most cases a credit line has been given. A number of companies have written stories on the Pioneer Village and Conservation Areas, as well as distributing Authority literature to their employees. Conventions: A close liaison has been maintained wick the Metropolitan Toronto Convention and Visitors Association. All conventions have been provided with our brochures as well as the special convention brochure having our facilities listed therein. Radio and TV Interviews and Press Releases: (Details covered in report of Public Relations Consultant) SCHOOL AND EDUCATION PROGRAMME: School Tours to September 1, 1962: 293 :lasses of approximately 9,500 students toured the Village; 119 classes of approximately3,439 students took Nature Hikes; 85 groups of approximately 1,172 students took scheduled Hikes; 4 classes of approximately 166 students took General Tour; 501 14,877 Projected Figures to October 31st: 175 classes of approximately 5,500 students will tour Village; 20 classes of approximately 600 students will take Hikes; 195 6,100 30% increase in conducted Tours over 1961. 4 Guides at the Pioneer Village; 1 Naturalist and two part -time Naturalists; Increases attributed to increased Staff and new time schedule. - 3 - G -8 Greater use made of teaching aids. Teachers? Guide to Pioneer Village has been re- written and will be illustrated for use during 1963. Conservation Camp School: Held in co- operation with a Grade 9 Class from York Memorial Collegiate at Humber Glen Camp on May 23 - 25, 1962. Junior Fishing Day: Held on May 26th in the Albion Hills Conservation Area for students of Grades 7 and 8 in the Western region of the Authority; Approximately seven hundred children participated with two hundred supervisors in attendance. Noon hour demonstrations given. Fireside Nites: Designed for family education and entertainment and to promote week -day evening use of the Areas. The general programme included nature hikes, demonstrations, fireside sing- songs, and movies of approximately one hour duration. Filr,s, projection equipment and operators were supplied by the National Film Board. It is recommended that six Fireside Nites be held in 1963 on Wednesday nights, and it is anticipated that the numbers attending should double. SPECIAL EVENTS: Geology Tour -- held in the Albion Hills Conservation Area on June 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Led by Dr. "alter , Tovell, head of the Earth Sciences Section of the Royal Ontario Museum. Attended by 250. Forest Wonderland Day -- Held in marquee at Boyd Conservation Area on July 28th and 29th in co- operation with the Ontario Forestry Association. Featured exhibits on forestry and a continuous film programme. Attended by 150. Othello: Shakespearean play held on the Pioneer Stage at the Pioneer Village on August 30th, 31st, and September 1st -- well attended, G -9 SCHEDULE ' ,TH Report No. 1 of the FISHING DAY SUB - COMMITTEE The Fishing Day Sub - Committee of the Information and Education Advisory Board met in the Board Room at 17 Mill Street on Wednesday, March 28th, 1962, commencing at 8:00 p.m. PRESENT WERE: Chairman C. The 1962 Junior Fishing Day will be held at Albion Hills Conservation Area on Saturday, May 26th, 1962; 2. All schools not participaiing in 1961 will be invited and quotas will be set to provide approximately the same number of participants as in previous years. The participating schools will be those in North York Etobicoke, York Township, Long Branch, New Toronto, King, Chinguacousy, Brampton, Bolton, Woodbridge, Vaughan, Toronto Twp. 3. True Or False Quiz to be provided to schools and an answer sheet to be included for use of teachers. 4. It is anticipated that the Sportsman?s Show will provide Conservation Charts for each school. 5. Supervisors be requested to: (a) Provide tackle and suitable rain clothing; (b) Pick up children at 9:00 a.m. to permit fishing to commence by 10:00 a,m. 6. Supervisors to be provided with: (a) Letter outlining Day9s Programme; (b) Crests; (c) Windhsield identity cards; (d) Programmes and Folders; (e) Box Lunches; 7. Participants be requested to: (a) Wear suitable clothing including rainwear; (b) Provide their own lunch; (c) Provide their own fishing tackle; 8. Acting Secretary The Chairman welcomed the members of the Committee and outlined the reasons for the establishment of such a Committee and the Terms of Reference of same. The Staff of the Authority presented a comprehensive outline of the present Nature Programme of the Authority. The present Programme and the possible future Programme was then discussed at some length. IT WAS AGREED THAT: (a) THAT a comprehensive Interpretative Programme is desireable in the Metropolitan region; (b) THAT in such a Programme, the following would be desirable: (i) THAT a Conservation and Natural History Centre as the major Centre of the region located where it would be readily available; (ii) Trail -side Display Shelters located in conjunction with Nature Trails in the various Conservation Areas of the Authority; (iii) a Botanical Garden and Museum within the boundaries of Metro; (iv) Extension of the present Programme of the Authority •. which might include such things as:- - geological tours; - watershed tours; - additional nature information booklets; - tours and courses for teachers which might lead to teaching credits; - additional classroom preparation in the schools; - courses etc. for youth leaders; (c) THAT the following be a Committee, with the first -named as Chairman, C -15 - 2 - to study and report back as to how such a Programme, and in particular, the Natural History Centre, might be implemented in the future: F.
